Antique Collectible European Torah Scroll Overview

This Older Scroll was held by the Caro Family in Southern California for many years. Upon the passing of his father, his son has placed this remarkable and unique scroll for sale with the intention that it finds a home where it would be studied, maintained and appreciated.

The Torah Scroll exhibits an ancient writing tradition with many odd letters, tagin, inverted letters and other conventions that are no longer observed in present day scribal practices… Certainly a testament to an older era.

The Torah’s calligraphy places the writing of the scroll in Northern Czechoslovakia / Southern Germany about 350 years ago. The scroll does not abide by the more modern Amudei Vav convention of writing the beginning of almost every column with the letter Vav.

Written in a 48 line per column standard, the scroll’s Klaf or parchment measures 23.5″ inches in length. Parchment sheets or Yeriot conserve their original sewing using a then common herring bone pattern for the seams, not in practice today.

This is indeed a testament to a gone by era in Jewish History.
